Tastes like wild hickory nuts!

I must say, I have never eaten a wild hickory nut.  I have never tasted a domesticated hickory nut either.  But hey, as the big road trip approaches, we are going shopping for all sorts of nuts and dried fruit.  We are going to be just like pioneers out there.  I just hope we don’t have to take things as far as the Donner party did back in 1847.  I would rather eat a wild hickory nut than some dead person’s arm.  I am funny that way.

Euell Gibbons (pictured above) did stalk wild asparagus.  I must say I have eaten that.  It used to grow in the ditches near the cemetery in my home town.  My mom had a cousin who could never say AH-SPARE-AH-GUSS.  She called it sparegrass.   Whatever.  When it grows wild in cemetery ditches, it is really tasty.  Must be the fertile soil.

Ta da!  You don’t really have to stalk it because it doesn’t really run around all the much.  You just kind of brush through the vegetation and there it is.  If we get hungry, we will cruise a few cemeteries and pick some up.

We are keeping it simple.  Just a few clothes.   Reading material.  First aid stuff.  And our nuts and berries.

I hope to find some cool geocaches out there among the big trees.

It’s also getting down to about 40 degrees in those mountains at night.  I am certainly looking forward to that!
