Big Trees, Here I Come!

Captain’s Log   6,056

In just 16 more days…..I will be here!

I cannot believe I am actually going to see these magnificent trees!  Some of them are more than 2,000 years old!

My traveling companion and I have agreed that we are going to live very basically on the trip.   Lots of fresh fruit and veggies, cottage cheese, string cheese, (and hard-boiled eggs and yogurts that we will snitch from the complimentary breakfast buffets every morning).  And nuts.  I don’t like to eat much when I travel by car, so this will be perfect.  Two changes of clothes and a sweatshirt each.  Jammies.  Blanket and pillow each.  Canvas chair each.  Two small coolers.  Cameras.  Reading material.  Chargers for our phones.  Journals.  Headlamps.  Batteries.  First aid kit.  Bug spray.  Minimal toiletries.  Enough socks and underwear for 8 days.  We will both be wearing Keens.

I cannot WAIT!

But I have to wait.  Two more weeks.  GAAAAAAA!

Because I am old, I was able to buy a senior pass for the national parks.  Only $10 and I can go into a any national park (with the passengers in the car) for free for the rest of my life!

I did not watch the debates last night.  I wanted my dinner to stay down.

Big Sister Mia and I are going to a farewell party for a friend tonight.  He is leaving his job of 20 years managing a bookstore (Mia’s favorite place).  He has been hired to manage a new comic book store here in town.   These are very exciting times for him.  He was the best thing about the bookstore but the management became jealous of his success.  To repay him for his years of loyal service, they cut his hours and took away his job title.  Passive/aggressive bullshit that I have seen happen so many times.  I can relate.  It happened to me twice.  The better you get and the more “ownership mentality” you exhibit, the more of a threat you become.  Just the opposite for me.  When I hear feedback about how wonderful one of my staff is at the museum, I celebrate.  And I hand out raises accordingly.  I don’t understand territorial people.  I am probably a socialist.

I found a really nice geocache yesterday.  I got stood up for a luncheon appointment (long story), so after enjoying a nice solo meal, I went back out to my car to leave.  On a whim, I clicked open the geocaching app to see if there were any good ones close by.  WOW!  Super close to the restaurant!

big cache

A very rare ammo box geocache

This one was cool.  I had to figure out the combination for the padlock (by reading the description of the cache).  It was filled with all sorts of fun things.  Big boxes like this are fun.  You don’t find them very often in high-traveled urban areas.   I really had fun with this one!

Sequoia National Park is truly awe-inspiring! I’d love to get back there someday, but in the meantime, I’m happy that you will soon get to enjoy the experience.

I’m happy for you looking forward to your fabulous trip. It sounds perfect. I’ll keep your list of must haves for a road trip for my next road trip. I must get in gear and plan something. You always plan fun things; I must get going here and do the same. Thanks for the inspiration.

I’ve only been in northern California once, and it was a business trip. Still thought the countryside was breathtaking! You’re going to have so much fun 🙂

  4. I’m so sorry about your bookish friend. That was really dumb of them to do this to him. Glad tho you are traveling again. We do with only one big cooler for the two of us…and lots of underwear. Don’t forget your meds and a second pair of shoes. 🙂

  5. We visited the redwoods a few years ago…It’s breathtaking to me. Trying to look up to see the top of the tree made me dizzy….I know you will enjoy the calm and the beauty, sounds of the birds and the magnificence.

Those trees are beautiful. Take lots of pix!!!

  8. I can’t believe those trees have been around for a third of the Earth’s existence! (Forgive my ignorance, but do you get to keep the stuff in the ammo box, or do you just admire it for a moment then put it back for the next person to enjoy?)

Imagine the geo caches you might fine in those big trees!
