Miss Joanie Saved My Weekend

Captain’s Log  4,451

I survived the weekend.  Five more days of work and then I get a day off.  Thank goodness.  Yesterday was brutal.  I picked up a staff member at 5:15 AM and we headed over to the car show.  Once we got there, we didn’t stop working.  I don’t think I sat down for more than five minutes the entire time.  I left the grounds about 2:30 in the afternoon.  Came home, ate a sandwich, and crashed.  Big time crashed.

We had a lovely lady barbershop quartet sing the national anthem and another song during the program.  Everyone thought it was lovely except one nasty old man who took it upon himself to scream at me (yes, he was screaming) about how awful it was to have a quartet sing such a sacred song.  Wonder how he feels when an entire chorale sings it.  What an ass!  He continued to scream at me about some people who were doing push-ups across the street when the flag was presented.  I had no idea who those people were.  I never even saw them doing push-ups.  They were not part of the event.  And…who the fook cares what private citizens do across the street in front of a health club?  He screamed and told me I did not have the true American spirit.

I have a feeling this ass-wad turd-head is a Republican.  I should have flashed him a photo of myself with my long hair and love beads.

He came up to the booth and told me I needed to sit down because he had a lot to say.  I told him I preferred to stand.  I’m 5’8″ and he was about 5’5″.  That might have had something to do with it.  It was quite the nasty scene.  Lots of people saw it.  I really really REALLY wanted to flip him off when he stormed away from me, but I held the high ground.  I have to.  If I had reacted badly, word would have spread like wildfire.  I cannot afford such bad publicity and neither can the museum.

Sometimes going Zen is harder than just getting mad.  I work on Zen every single day.  It’s getting easier.  Slowly.

On Saturday, I made a trip to Joanie, Hairdresser Exceptionale’s new salon!  WOW!  It is amazing!  Compared to where she was working, this is about a 300% improvement!  Lovely!  And people are so very friendly.  When I walked in and did not know where to go, someone graciously escorted me to her area.  I was offered coffee made in one of those individual cup machines too!  Joanie explained later that the salon provides all the shampoo products for them to use because they sell them in their store.  Consequently, she used some really high-end something on my hair and it was beyond wonderful!  It smelled like mint and my entire head tingled.  For someone who LOVES having her hair washed, it was true nirvana.

Look at this place!  It even has a fountain!  And it’s right next door to the mall’s food court!  I got a cheese pretzel and lemonade while I waited for Joanie to finish up a client.

Joanie said her weekly chair rental is just $5 more than it was in the other place.  Holy mommacita!  She is getting a tremendous amount more for her money at the new place.  I was impressed!

Since I was her last appointment of the day, she took a lot of time with the cut and tried a different approach.  She referred to it as “chopping into the hair.”  She chopped for a long time and I was very happy with the results.

When you are as picky about who cuts your hair as I am, this is all an added bonus.  Not only do I have Joanie cutting my hair, I now have her cutting it in the lap of luxury!  Short hair is a commitment in terms of upkeep.  Glad to have Joanie along for the adventure.

So I had better be about the business of the day.  The hot weather is lingering, and that means my office will be a sauna by mid-afternoon once the sun beats through my windows.  There is no stopping it.  That’s why it is important to get as much productive work done as early as possible.

  1. I’m so sorry this beast on two legs tried to destroy your Zen and to cheapen something positive. I am glad I don’t have to deal with his karma.

LOVE the hair – the choppy look is really sharp looking on you.

  2. You and I seem to have very similar hair texture. I think cutting “into” the hair helps eliminate the bulk!

  3. Joanie Benson

Wow, thanks for the nice words about the new salon. I’m so glad you liked it! (knew you would). I plan to stay there for a long time, maybe till I die. I HATE moving. We did have fun yesterday, didn’t we? And after seeing that photo you took I am making a promise to myself to get more sleep!! I look tired. Remind me to wear sunglasses like you next time. lol

  4. Where in heaven’s name did this unprintable person come from. Yes, zen is the only way to deal with fools, yet your insides still get tangled even if your exterior is calm. I’m so sorry. Why didn’t you come over here and yell at me. Hugs and love.

  5. I swear the next time I plan on visiting San Diego, I am going to grow my hair out and have Joanie give it a go……I bet the new salon is awesome….just like her.
As for the man….how very patriotic of him to scream at you in public at an event…so mature…..at least he wasn’t armed…..

  6. Glad you got a wonderful haircut as a reward for your bad day! Obviously, I understand the short hair thing. Unfortunately, I lost my 20+ year haircutter last year (lung cancer). I still go to Great Clips (not as fancy as yours, but cheaper, I’m sure), but don’t have a special cutter.

Also glad you could keep your cool with the !@#$%^ guy. That always makes them madder, and then you get some self-satisfaction out of it.
