Sad, Sad Monday

Captain’s Log  4,477

Words cannot express the sadness I feel this morning after learning what vandals did to the historic lily pond in Balboa Park in the wee hours of Sunday morning.  There was a huge water pistol fight in the park, and it got out of hand.  Over 1,500 people showed up to spray water at each other.  The organizers encouraged everyone to leave the pond alone, but that never happened.  A critical drainage pipe in the pond was broken, and the results are so awful.

Here are some before and after photos.

How the pond looks on a typical day.

How the pond looked Sunday morning.

The pond not only contains priceless water lilies, it is also home to turtles and priceless koi.  Most of the fish have already died.

And where were the security officers when this happened?   There is only one security guard for the entire park at night.  One!  Is that enough?  You tell me.

This whole thing makes me sick at heart.  The park is such a treasure and yet people trash it all the time!  Police response in the park after dark usually takes an hour.  I am not kidding.

The event was publicized on places like Facebook, so authorities are trying to track down the organizers and make them pay.  There is a monetary cost, but some of those fish have lived in the park for years and years.  What about those poor creatures?

I am so very angry!

  1. Horrible! Probably some if the same people who mob your museum on free Tuesday. That picture is so sad!

Absolutely dreadful. It may never recover. It is probably an expensive luxury that the council may now have an excuse to pave over for parking or something. I hope that is not the case. So sad.

  4. What a terrible waste! Makes me sick and sad.

Nobody can understand the how or the why. No way one security guard could handle this. The city got rid of the police on horses a few years ago. They could have done something about this.

  5. What a shame! Obviously “senseless vandalism” is just that – senseless. 8`^(

  6. Why in the world was there permission to even have this event there? Or was there permission? ~ this is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of….it’s like saying……Let’s have a mock Civil War reenactment on the White House lawn….. You are so right….the loss of those fish and other animals and the years it took to get the lily pond to where it was will never be replaced….I’m glad I got to see it when it was still entact and beautful.

  7. It’s beyond understanding. As far as that goes, I don’t understand a mass appearance because everyone read it on their phones. Maybe when a few of the instigators get hurt…but I would bet they are not participants. They’re watching from a distance hilltop, right?

I have no idea. One of my staff got a call around 2:00 asking him to come down and “play” at the pond. He was surprised. Saw the devastation after the sun came up.
